All or nothing
This is an ongoing drawing inquiry into perception. I have always seen images in surfaces, textures and juxtapositions of objects that were not created as pictures as such. In some cases they could be described as accidental or highly subjective visions. So I've been exploring how it might be possible to create ambiguous visual statements - ones that are up for an individual's interpretation. I was always struck by the idea that in the ambient music of Brian Eno one of his arguments for the absence of a clear musical 'object' is to enable a listener to become present themselves in the composition. For them to respond with their own interpretation and ideas.
So I'm exploring the degree to which an image tells a story or creates a place for interpretation and imagination.
Some of these drawings became part of a series that I loosely called 'All or Nothing'. That is, they have the potential to reveal everything to the viewer or maybe nothing at all.
These drawings also have a sense of obsession about them. They are often arduous and time consuming drawing processes with repetitive mark making. They are expressing an idea I have about the kinetic impact of the drawn surface rather than the image that is formed by the sum total of the marks. They may create a sensation at a physical, rather than an intellectual level.
